The Kootenai Highlanders held their eighth annual Highland Gathering over the weekend of July 17-18 at the River Bend. After much discussion and deliberation earlier in the year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided that the event could proceed, and then with the additional precautions observing the governor's orders of July 15 with consideration for social distancing and mask wearing.
The event celebrates Celtic culture and features traditional games sanctioned by the Scottish American Athletic Association, as well as pipers, drummers, dancers, clans in traditional dress, music, food, and vendors.
Some members from the Montana Highlanders Association Bagpipe Band from Kalispell were in attendance to lend their musical talents and to lead the clans to introductions on Saturday.
According to the Kootenai Highlanders, 85 athletes participated in the games, coming from around the country and many attending due to cancelled events elsewhere due to the pandemic.
Angie McLaury, Tammy Blackburn and Dee Teske are credited with organizing the Gathering, a tradition of Celtic culture, competition, and kinship.
