FWP to host public meeting in Libby to review Chronic Wasting Disease response Meeting to be held Jan. 13 at Libby City Hall by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks December 21, 2019 Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host a public meeting in Libby next month to discuss chronic wasting disease and review response efforts. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Jan. 13, 2020, inside the Libby City Hall Ponderosa Room, 952 East Spruce St. FWP staff will present information on CWD sampling and surveillance from the general hunting season. FWP has collected more than 1,205 samples in Libby and an additional 207 at its Region 1 headquarters. Statewide, more than 6,800 samples have been collected since spring. In the Libby CWD Management Zone, 49 animals – one mule deer, and 48 white-tailed deer – have been detected as positive. One moose just outside the Libby CWD Management Zone was also confirmed positive for CWD. CWD is a progressive, fatal disease affecting the nervous system of mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and moose. There is no known transmission of CWD to humans or other animals, including pets or livestock. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that hunters harvesting a deer, elk, or moose from an area where CWD is known to be present have their animal tested for CWD prior to consuming the meat, and to not consume the meat if the animal tests positive.
