The second annual Kootenai Country Montana Chainsaw Carving Championship took place over the weekend, September 21-23, along Mineral Avenue. The three-day event featured 20 of the best carvers from around the world, representing the United States, Zimbabwe, Japan, Lithuania, Scotland, Argentina, Moldova, Slovakia and Ireland.
Returning carvers included Steven Higgins from Missouri, last year's overall, quick carve, and People's Choice winner for an awards sweep; Hikaru Kodama from Japan, Mark Colp from California, Todd Coats from northwest Montana, Josh Blewett from Oregon, Jacob Lucas from Washington, Les Smith from northwest Montana, and Joe Dussia from Pennsylvania.
The carvers began their work Friday morning and continued throughout the day. Besides an exhibition piece to be completed by Sunday, the participants were required to quick-carve a piece each of the three days of the competition. These pieces were auctioned to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Incredible artistic talent showcasing Libby's beauty and abundant natural resources was on display during the three days of this carving competition.
