Highway 37 Fire
by Maggie Craig
July 20, 2018

The Highway 37 Fire just north of Libby appeared to have been held at an estimated 40 to 60 acres on Friday, aided by water drops, heavy equipment and ground personnel. The proximity to the W.R. Grace vermiculite mine and its associated asbestos-contaminated surroundings drew a quick response and the resources needed to attack the fire.

As of Friday, no structures were threatened although the Bonneville power lines from Libby Dam crossing through the area were a concern.

Motorists are asked to comply with traffic restrictions on Highway 37 and boaters to stay off the Kootenai River from Osprey Landing to the Highway 37 bridge in order for the helicopters working the fire to refill safely.

At this time there is no estimate for containment.
