Pileated Woodpecker January 18, 2016 This Pileated Woodpecker was foraging for bugs in an old stump in late December. Year-round residents of western Montana, they feed on ants and beetles found in live and dead trees and fruit when available. This bird is a female, as evidenced by the brown forehead and lack of a red slash extending from the bill.
