Ural-Tweed Bighorn Sheep
May 5, 2015

Bighorn sheep from the Ural-Tweed herd can often be seen
along Hwy. 37, as these were in late April. As documented
by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, this herd and the Ten
Lakes bighorn sheep herd are native to northwest Montana
and are of a different genotype than sheep found elsewhere
in Montana. This genotype extends from Koocanusa northward
to Golden, British Columbia. The Ural-Tweed population is
currently estimated to be around 25 animals.
