Debris burning leads to catching power poles on fire
by Duane Williams, KLCB-KTNY Radio
May 9, 2014

Four Flathead Electric power poles were inadvertently set on fire recently by people conducting debris burns on their properties and the problem seems to be on the rise. In most instances, the poles have caught fire during open burning season, but burning is allowed with permits at certain times.

For durability through extreme weather events, power poles used by Flathead Electric are treated with a preservative known to be highly resistant to rot, however, highly flammable.

Burning power poles cause outages, are dangerous for crews and the general public, and are costly. In the past, Flathead Electric hasn't pursued reimbursement for expenses incurred by replacing poles and charred equipment, but if the upsurge in incidents continues, that may have to change. Depending on the location and positioning, these poles can run from $500 up to $20,000. Add to that the labor costs of installation, and you have a pricey situation.
