The Kootenai Wildland Firefighter Challenge & Firesafe Expo 2014 will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 1-5PM at J. Neils Park in Libby. The event will include fire agencies, local government, FireSafe Council, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Red Cross, and more.
Challenge contestants are firefighters from the Northwest Zone including, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), US Forest Service, local fire, National Park Service, Tribal and other firefighter teams.
The Challenge is a series of competitive events for firefighter teams. Events comprise different firefighting techniques and tasks that occur on a fire.
The event is a fundraiser for Wildland Firefighter Foundation, public education, team building between fire fighter personnel, and for fun. The dual purpose of the Firefighter Challenge Fundraiser is to acclimate new and experienced wildland firefighters to similar physical demands and mental challenges faced during a typical fire season, and to assist the Wildland firefighter Foundation in raising funds to provide vital financial and emotional assistance to families of wildland firefighters who die, or are seriously injured in the line of duty. This year the event is partnering with Fire Safe Montana to provide education regarding fire preparedness, safety and awareness through a ‘fair’ type atmosphere.
The first Kootenai Wildland Firefighter Challenge fundraiser was held June 15th, 2013 at the River Bend in Libby, Montana and was a huge success. The event raised around $13,000.00 to benefit the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
