Berget appointed to Rail Service Competition Council

Lincoln County Commissioner Tony Berget has been appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to serve on Montana's Rail Service Competition Council, a 13-member committee aimed at improving railroad service across the state.

Berget was chosen based on his knowledge of the transportation needs of the mineral industry. The council includes members with knowledge of the coal, agricultural, wood products and trucking industries along with representatives of the Montana House and Senate, the directors of the state departments of revenue, agriculture and transportation, and the head of the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

Railroads are a vital pipeline for Lincoln County's economy allowing for the transportation of large amounts of materials into and out of an area with limited highway access.

The council's duties include developing a comprehensive plan to increase rail service competition and ensure reliable service at reasonable rates, evaluating Montana's railroad taxation practices, developing various means to assist Montanans impacted by high rates and poor rail service, coordinating efforts with other states and federal agencies to promote rail service competition, and promoting the expansion of existing rail lines and the construction of new rail lines in the state.
