Libby woman saves man from burning home

Heavy black smoke bellowed into the Sunday morning Libby sky at 311 Idaho Avenue. It was 10:29AM.

911 calls and one regular land line call lit up the board at Lincoln County dispatch. Libby Fire Department was paged.

Meanwhile, Rose Howard, who was running a few errands, happened to see the black smoke coming from the home on Idaho. She stopped and started to dial 911, she found a garden hose and turned it on to start to put a fire out. Rose put out as much of the fire as possible with what little water pressure was coming from the hose.

All the while, she was knocking on the door...no answer.

Rose went into the house and woke the sleeping man inside, and got him out of the burning building. Fireman and police showed up and took over. The occupant, Jamie Abrahamson was suffering from smoke inhalation. According to Fire Marshall Steve Lauer, the fire appears accidental and ignited in trash containers on the exterior of the building, but the exact source has not been identified. Estimated damage to the building is $20,000-30,000. Alarms did activate.

As Dawn Ornelas, a friend of Rose's put it, "one can only hope that Rose did what anyone of us would do...we hope. Thank you, Rose, for helping one of our Libby residents live another day and have a home as well."

This is one of those stories that brings home why some of us live in Libby, Montana. It is our people. People like Rose Howard.
