The "Montana Honor Guard" is taking "Standing for the Fallen" Montana" on a road trip across the United States. A walking route that will began in Everett, Washington, March 31, 2013, pass through twelve US states and finish at the Vietnam War Memorial at our Nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C. in late-October.
Sunday, (April 21) Troy's Mayor Tony Brown and VFW Post #5514 Past Commander, Mark Olson and members, and Troy community members greeted and welcomed Ronan, Montana's Veteran, Chuck Lewis, Sgt, USM, retired at the Troy VFW on Yaak Avenue. Lewis is the veteran walking for The "Montana Honor Guard". He is walking to bring awareness of Fallen/returning veterans. His journey is his way of expressing his right to show patriotism, freedom, faith, charity, and religion and bring an awareness of our fallen and returning veterans.
Lewis was presented checks and money from the Veterans and the Ladies Auxiliary and community members. Lewis told the audience about some of his experiences. Lewis said: "people are stopping and getting out of their cars hugging him and thanking him." One lady stopped him and was crying. She said, "her daughter was going in the service in July." He told her, "she'll be in good hands." Another young man, 19, in Newport, Washington said, "you’re the man on TV walking across the county, Walking for the Fallen. A friend and I tried that and we couldn't make it. Do you know what's so cool about you doing it? "Your old"." Lewis is 62.
Troy VFW Post members arranged dinner, a complimentary room at Troy's Holiday Motel, and breakfast at Oldie's Big Sky Cafe.
Lewis is currently walking on Hwy 2 and plans to reach Kalispell approximately April 24th. He's been traveling about 20 miles a day and camping on his journey.
