Birds of Prey talk at Libby Dam Visitor Center April 27
April 19, 2013

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, Libby Dam Visitor Center will be hosting a free presentation by raptor biologist Janie Fink.

Fink is a veterinarian and wildlife rehabilitator from Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. She will bring several live hawks, owls, eagles and falcons with her to Libby Dam Visitor Center. The free presentation will be from 10AM to 2PM. There will be two lectures, the first at 11am and the second at 12:30pm. There will be an educational presentation and opportunities to see the birds and ask questions. There will be multiple other activities available between 10am and 2pm including wildlife movies, games and information tables.

Ms. Fink has studied and worked with birds of prey for twenty years. She has nursed injured wild birds of prey back to health and reintroduced to the wild endangered raptors such as ospreys and peregrine falcons. She travels with live specimens to educate the public about their ecological value, and the challenges they face.

On the day of the event, the Libby Dam Visitor Center will also offer wildlife videos in the theater and visitors can watch nesting bald eagles on closed-circuit TV at the visitor center. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and their own binoculars and spotting scopes so they may enjoy the views of wildlife from the recreation areas around the dam before and after the event. There are many wildlife viewing opportunities on the drive along the Kootenai River and at Libby Dam.

To ensure safety of the birds, organizers will be capping attendance based on the number of seats available. Anyone who may need assistance with seating should call by April 25th to reserve a spot.

Reserved seats unoccupied 15 minutes before lecture start will be forfeit. For the safety of the birds, handler and audience, no photography is allowed during the presentations. A photo opportunity for journalists can be arranged by calling Susan James with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Libby Dam, 406-293-5577.

Libby Dam is located 17 miles north of Libby, Montana. The visitor center is located on the west side of the dam and can be reached from the Forest Development Road (FDR) #228 off of Hwy 37. Libby Dam Visitor Center is generally open Monday through Friday, 9-5 in the winter and spring, subject to staffing. Please call ahead during the winter to ensure availability. 406-293-5577. The visitor parking area, picnic area and boat ramp are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; however for security purposes, the top of the dam is closed to all traffic. Tours of the dam are available in the summer on a daily basis and by appointment during the winter and spring. Please call (406) 293-5577 for more information or to reserve a tour.
