Family seeks help for son’s illness
by Duane Williams, KLCB-KTNY Radio
December 30, 2012

The family and friends of Zachary Haines are uniting to raise money to help with Zachary’s battle against his brain stem tumor.

Zachary is a very special boy. He was born February 19th, 2002, 2 pounds 10 ounces. He has been a miracle from the beginning. Now he has grown into the most unselfish, loving, funny, and caring 10 year old boy. Zachary loves school, fishing, and his dogs. He is full of life and nothing can get this little boy down, not even the brain stem tumor he was recently diagnosed with. He is surrounded by so many people that love him and think the world of him. When you’re having a bad day, Zach can make you laugh and forget about it. He always has a smile on his face and has a huge heart.

Zach was diagnosed with a large tumor in his brain stem on December 20th. He was life flighted to Seattle Children’s Hospital the very next day to begin treatment for his tumor. He underwent a delicate operation on December 26th to biopsy the tumor. He will begin radiation on January 3rd and chemotherapy shortly after that. Doctors are not 100% certain what this tumor is until the biopsy report gets back, but believe it to be a rare aggressive type of tumor and because of where his tumor is, they are unable to operate.

Zachary has agreed to have any leftover pieces of his tumor biopsy sent to Boston for research on brain tumors. Zach actually signed the consent form himself and agreed to this after it was explained to him that this is something that can help other children with brain tumors in the future. This is Zach’s nature-caring, giving and totally unselfish.

Donations will be used to help with expenses related to travel, paying bills at home so family can spend as much time as possible with Zach and for activities for Zach to help him keep his mind off this and to help him live his life to the fullest.

We all know medical bills are a monster, so read his story and if you feel like helping out, give what you can, even if it is just a little! Zach has a Caring Bridge site set up for us to get updates on his progress. If you want to track Zachary's fight, go to www.caringbridge.org/visit/zacharyhaines

He is the son of Tatum Haines and Carmella Pederson in Libby.
