Don Banning is no longer Mayor of Troy. Troy voters turned Banning out in the recall election on Thursday (May 24, 2012), but not by the sweeping margin one might have expected from the street talk. It was a reasonably close election.
The vote was 190 in favor of the recall and 123 wanting to keep Banning, a margin of 67 votes for 61% for recall, and 39% against. A total of 313 voters cast ballots.
The recall effort launched in February by City Councilman Fran McCully accused Banning of abuse of power.
The recall petition accuses Banning of trying to fire City Attorney Charles Evans without legitimate reason or prior consent of the city council, cashing a check for travel expenses not approved by the council, construction of a picnic area and pavilion, and codifying city ordinances without consulting the council.
The Troy Council now will appoint a new Mayor.
Banning has been in office since 2010. __________________________________
