Corps of Engineers asks for public comment period for Montanore

The comment period for the Montanore recently ended. And just as you think the process can again move forward, the Army Corps of Engineers comes along asking for another public comment period regarding Montanore operations in the Cabinet Mountains before giving the green light on mining operations at the site here in northwest Montana.
"The comment period has not been extended for the SDEIS. The US Army Corps of Engineers has a permitting process separate from the USFS and MDEQ. After more than a year working with them, they have determined the application and proposed mitigation is complete enough to start their process", Eric Klepfer of Montanore told KLCB Radio.

"This is a big hurdle we just got over and now it can hopefully move concurrently with the EIS process with the US Army Corps making a permit decision at the same time as the USFS and MDEQ", Klepfer said.

The Montanore project has been working with the Corps of Engineers for 18 months on an application for a 404 permit, which means the mine has met regulations to begin operating near streams and wetlands.

The Corps has accepted the application for the permit, but the Montanore proposal must undergo yet another public comment period. December 16th, the US Army Corps published their public notice and will take comments until Feb 14th. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality and Forest Service comments for the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement should take about a month to go through.
