St. John’s Hospice receives Compassionate Care Grant
by St. John’s Lutheran Hospital
October 7, 2011
Driven by their mission to provide excellent hospice care to everyone in their service area facing a life threatening illness, regardless of their ability to pay, St. John’s Lutheran Hospital’s Hospice Program applied for and received a $1,200 Compassionate Care grant from the Hospice Care Foundation of Missoula.
According to Laura Sedler, Social Worker for St. John’s Hospice, the grant was a perfect fit for their mission and it came at the perfect time. "The Compassionate Care grants are intended to help not-for-profit Hospices in Western Montana provide hospice services to uninsured individuals. This has always been a part of the mission of St. John’s Hospice, but our funds –which are donated to us by individuals and community organizations such as Combined Campaign—have been depleted in recent years by a higher demand for uncompensated care and fewer charitable donations," said Sedler. "Over the past 18 months we have had to use significantly more dollars to meet this mission than we had coming in as donations, so the approval of this grant was very good news indeed and will be used to replenish those funds that are earmarked for uninsured care."
The Hospice Care Foundation was established in 1981, with an annual Missoula fundraiser, the Hospice Ball. The mission of the Foundation is to fund compassionate care activities and to educate communities in Montana on hospice and palliative care. They also strive to ensure the option of quality hospice care is available to all who need it.
"We can’t thank the Hospice Care Foundation enough for all the good work they do," added Sedler. "We hope to continue to work with them in the future for those patients who cannot afford hospice care, and for community and volunteer education projects."
