Max Baucus legislative news

Senator Max Baucus Wednesday introduced legislation to renew two federal programs for five years which have provided funding everything from schools to road construction in Lincoln County. The Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act and Payment in Lieu of Taxes programs expired two weeks ago, and counties were worried about the loss of millions of dollars in federal revenue.
The Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act has been key funding for counties like Lincoln County, where the loss of the timber industry has made it tough for counties to rely on forest income. The Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act along with the Payment in Lieu of Taxes program, are used to stabilize federal payments from timber sales, providing a more reliable source of funds, where counties have large tracts of federal lands, such as the Kootenai National Forest that are not subject to local taxes. _____________________________________________
