The Lincoln County Public Library in Libby will be presenting a full calendar of programs during the month of October. All events are free and open to the public.
The Lincoln County Public Libraries Board of Trustees is working on a long-range strategic plan and would like public input. Focus groups will be held in each library so community members may share their opinions on the future of library services in Lincoln County. The focus groups will be held at the Libby Library on Monday, October 3 from 4-5:30 pm, at the Troy Library on Monday, October 3 from 6:30-8 pm, and at the Eureka Library on Tuesday, October 4 from 9:30-11 am. Refreshments will be served.
The Lincoln County Libraries in Troy, Eureka and Libby will be closed on Saturday, October 8 for Columbus Day.
The Libby Library hosts its after-school program every Wednesday at 4 pm throughout the school year. Kids and families can come to the library for a variety of programs ranging from arts and crafts to food preparation to cultural exploration.
The Libby Friends of the Library will hold a meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 6 pm at the Libby Library. All are welcome.
The Libby Friends of the Library hold a monthly book sale on the first Friday of each month from 10 until 5. This month, the book sale will be on Friday, October 7.
Come participate in the International Observe the Moon Night at the Libby Library. Each fall, millions of people from hundreds of countries come together to view the moon and learn about science and exploration. Viewings and activities, presented in conjunction with the Kootenai Stargazers Astronomy Club, will begin at 7 pm on October 8, 2011 at the Libby Library. As a recipient of an InOMN grant, the library can now make viewing the moon easier with a pair of Orion Astro-Binoculars. In addition to the viewing there will be fun family activities and moon-related treats.
The libraries host one technology-related program per month in each library. In October, the librarians will teach attendees how to get an email account. Different email options will be discussed and a demonstration will be given of obtaining and working with a Yahoo! email account. Laptops will be provided for hands-on practice. The program will be held at the Libby Library on Tuesday, October 11 at 6 pm, at the Troy Library on Thursday, October 27 at 5:30 pm, and at the Eureka Library on Saturday, October 29 at 2 pm.
The Libby Library hosts its monthly program series "Old Time-y Tuesdays" on the third Tuesday of the month at 5 pm. Classic movies are shown on the big screen and popcorn is provided. On October 18, the library will screen the classic mystery Murder on the Orient Express (1974, 128 minutes) starring Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, and Sean Connery. Based on the Agatha Christie novel, a train full of suspects and one murder victim make the trip from Istanbul to Calais especially interesting. Super-sleuth Hercule Poirot sets out to solve the mystery.
The Libby Library presents Family Movies @ Your Library on fourth Saturday of each month. This event begins at noon. On Saturday, October 22 celebrate Halloween with the 2001 Pixar film Monsters, Inc. (G, 89 minutes). The big, blue and fuzzy James P. Sullivan and his opinionated, one-eyed roommate Mike Wzowski are two professional "scare specialists" Their job is to harness the energy created when they make little kids scream. When they accidentally let a young girl named Boo into their world behind the closets and under the beds, it throws their life into chaos.
The Libby Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, October 25 at 6 pm to discuss the novel Going Bovine by Libby Bray. Winner of the 2010 Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, Going Bovine tells the story of Cameron Smith, a disaffected sixteen year-old who, after being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, sets off on a road trip with a death-obsessed video gaming dwarf he meets in the hospital in an attempt to find a cure. Books are available at the library for 14-day checkout.
The last Friday of every month is Amnesty Day at the Lincoln County Libraries. This month, Amnesty Day is Friday, October 28. Any materials less than 90 days overdue which are returned in good condition to any of the three libraries on that day will have all penalties waived. Overdue interlibrary loan materials are not included.
