Eureka's drinking water treatment plant and pump house for the infiltration gallery were destroyed due to a fire. Eureka has a well that will be utilized until reconstruction can occur. Water use restrictions will be implemented.
The infiltration gallery pump house building started on fire somewhere around 6 pm on Wednesday. The fire department responded to put the fire out, but the building appears to be a total loss at this time. Fire personnel are going through the debris to see what started the fire and an inventory of damaged equipment will take place after their investigation. Current facilities that are not operational include the infiltration gallery, treatment plant for infiltration gallery and chlorine contact pipe.
Eureka is currently operating off the refurbished well which can produce 400gpm. The well facility does have chlorination equipment and residuals will be maintained. Current monitoring and various treatment plant monitoring will not be completed until the infiltration gallery equipment can be repaired or replaced and operating. Meanwhile, the City of Eureka is placing watering restrictions on the system. _____________________________________________
