Be Bear Aware
by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks
August 21, 2011

Several encounters between hikers and bears have prompted wildlife managers to remind huckleberry-pickers, hikers, backpackers, and hunters about the basics of safety in bear country.

Huckleberry-pickers, hikers, bird hunters and archery hunters, can all benefit from a review of these safety tips:
- Let someone know where you are going and when you will return;
- carry bear pepper spray and understand how and when to use it;
- refer to brochures and guidelines for details on using bear pepper spray;
- make your presence known by calling out or talking loudly;
- be aware of your surroundings and look for bear activity signs;
- hike in groups;
- don’t hike alone;
- keep children close to you and in sight.

More detailed tips on safety and wildlife encounters are found in brochures available at FWP or USFS offices. A brochure on hunting safety is available.

Hikers, backpackers, and hunters are reminded that food storage orders are now in effect for Kootenai National Forest. Food items must be hung at least 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet from top and side supports.

For more information about traveling safely in bear country, visit the FNF website, (www.fs.usda.gov/flathead), or the FWP website (www.fwp.mt.gov).
