Two people are dead in a double fatality accident five miles east of Happy's Inn on US Hwy 2 about 3:45pm Tuesday afternoon, July 5th.
A man was pinned beneath the rear wheel of a vehicle, and a woman suffered head injures. The two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Alert helicopter from Kalispell had responded. A third person, a male adult, was taken to Kalispell by Montana Highway Patrol.
A pickup truck pulling a twin axle camper trailer driven by Barry L. Pomeroy, 42 years old from Kalispell, formerly of Libby, attempted to turn left into the Logan campground at the same time a motorcycle was passing it in a legal passing zone. The motorcycle locked the rear brake and attempted an evasive maneuver to the left but lost control of the motorcycle causing it to slide into the driver's side of pickup truck. Jacob Pomeroy, 17 year old son of the pickup driver, was the right front passenger. Both were using seatbelts.
The motorcycle was ridden by Randy Burningham, 59 years old with passenger, his spouse, Brenda Burningham, 55 years old, both from Salem, Oregon. Both occupants of the motorcycle were completely ejected and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Both occupants were wearing helmets. Both vehicles were traveling west on Highway #2 towards Libby in the Thompson Lake area. The occupants of the pickup were not injured in the crash.
Alcohol use and speed are not considered contributing factors in the crash pending toxicology results from the state crime lab.
The lead investigator in the crash is Trooper Jon Underwood from Kalispell assisted by Sgt. Duane Bowers. ______________________________________________
