KNF makes Food Storage Order mandatory

Voluntary Food Storage Guidelines have been expanded to be mandatory on all Kootenai National Forest lands.
Complying with this new Food Storage and Sanitation Special order will reduce human-wildlife interactions, promote human safety, and protect wildlife. This order will apply to all recreation users, permittees, and contractors who occupy and use National Forest lands. The order outlines food and garbage must be in sight of an adult during daylight. If an attractant is unattended, or it is after dark, it must be properly stored in a hard-sided vehicle or building, a bear-resistant container, hung above the ground out of the reach of wildlife, or in an approved electric fence.
Forest managers will be posting information and providing education to Forest users about food storage requirements. Equipment such as wildlife-resistant garbage dumpsters and food storage bins will be installed at campgrounds and administrative sites. _______________________________________________
