April 1, 2011

The Lincoln County Public Libraries will be presenting a full calendar of programs during the month of April. All events are free and open to the public.

The libraries in Libby, Troy, and Eureka will be closed to the public on Friday, April 8 for a staff in-service day. Periodic in-service days allow staff to maintain the quality of service provided despite recent budget cuts.

April is National Poetry Month and the Lincoln County Public Libraries will celebrate with their annual county-wide poetry contest and series of poetry-themed events. The theme this year is "boundaries." Contest rules will be available on April 1 at all three Lincoln County Libraries.

The Libby Library hosts after school programs for kids every Wednesday at 4 pm. Depending on the topic of the week, kids and families have the opportunity to learn about different subjects or show their creative skills through arts and crafts projects.

The Libby Friends of the Library hold a monthly book sale on the first Friday of each month from 10 until 5. This month, the book sale will be on Friday, April 1.

As part of the libraries’ National Poetry Month celebration, come to the Libby Library on Tuesday, April 5 at 5 pm for the 1998 film Slam (100 minutes, rated R). Ray, a talented black poet, is forced to redirect his life after getting busted on petty drug charges. While in jail, he meets Lauren, a black volunteer who runs a workshop for creative writing. Impressed by his talent, Lauren encourages Ray to use his gift to voice the anguish of his lost generation. Upon his jail release, Ray participates in a poetry slam, giving a painfully rousing plea to other black males. The film won honors at the Cannes Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival.

On Tuesday, April 12 at 6 pm, Kent Laudon of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will visit the Libby Library to discuss wolves. Mr. Laudon’s presentation will include such topics as the history of wolves in northwest Montana and the Libby area, ecology, population, field work, the FWP wolf program, administrative matters, livestock conflicts, and predator-prey relationships. Mr. Laudon has been working for FWP as the Wolf Management Specialist for northwest Montana since 2004.

The Libby Library will host a full-day basic knitting class on Saturday, April 16. At 10 am, come to the library for "Knitting 101" with visiting knitting guru Linda Daviau. This month, the library will screen the film Easter Parade (1948, 103 minutes), starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. Irving Berlin’s music and lyrics tell the story of Don Hewes’ rise to stardom with Hannah Brown, while his ex-partner Nadine Hale makes it big on Broadway.

The Libby Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 pm to discuss The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. The book features twenty-two short stories which relate the exploits and personalities of a fictional platoon of American soldiers in 1970Vietnam.

The Libby Library presents Family Movies @ Your Library on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. These events begin at noon. On Saturday, April 9 the library will show the 1970 Disney film The Aristocats (78 minutes, G). A family of French felines finds action, adventure and amour when they are named heirs to their mistress' millions. Come to the library on Saturday, April 23, to watch the 2003 Disney film Brother Bear (85 minutes, G). He finds himself magically transformed into a bear himself only to be hunted by his middle brother, Denami, who thinks he is the bear who killed his siblings. Through this hardship, Kenai learns the true meaning of brotherhood.

The last Friday of every month is Amnesty Day at the Lincoln County Libraries. This month, Amnesty Day is Friday, April 29.
