Polar Bear 2011 New Year Plunge
January 3, 2011
The Libby Polar Bear Club held its annual New Year Plunge on Sunday, January 2, at its traditional spot on Libby Creek on Farm to Market Road. Four people came to take the plunge, including club president Polar Bear Rick Klin; regular Steve Sonju; nine-year-old Matthew White, who received a Junior Membership certificate for completing six swims; and intrepid Jan Ivers. Several spectators were on hand to witness the spectacle. Recent snowfall blanketed the area under an air temperature of 25 degrees with the water at 33 degrees. Special thanks go to the volunteers who make this event happen, including Dorothy Klin, who sets up, registers swimmers, and buys and serves drinks and refreshments; Ben Klin, who shovels snow, tends the fire and helps with setup and takedown; Earl Goble, who for several years has voluntarily plowed out for parking; and the swimmers, who participate and provide fun for all. The mood is always festive and it's a great family event, whether swimming or watching.
