Libby native Ken Decker wins Maryland award
May 17, 2010
Maryland city manager, Ken Decker, received the Janet L. Hoffman Award for Outstanding Local Public Service on May 11 in Annapolis, Maryland. Decker was selected as the 2010 award recipient by the Maryland Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.
"Ken has done a great job for Hampstead over the past decade," said Mayor Haven N. Shoemaker, Jr. "He deserves the accolade." Hampstead is a small city north of Baltimore, Maryland, with a population of about 7,000.
Decker received the award for his work on a number of major projects including the construction of a major bypass road around Hampstead, the development of a park complex and renovation of a historic school into affordable senior housing. "What is impressive is that Ken managed to do everything while keeping our property tax rate one of the lowest in the state," Shoemaker added.
Decker made Montana news last year as one of the three finalists for the vacant city manager job in Polson. He withdrew from consideration before flying out for the final interview, but declined to go into any detail.
"My wife and I have long planned to return to Montana. It’s just a matter of finding the right opportunity," Decker said. "Polson is a great Montana community and I wish them the best," he added.
A graduate of Libby High School in 1980, Decker finished his Bachelor’s Degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. He worked in Spokane until moving to Maryland in 1996. Decker has served as Hampstead’s manager since 1999.
