Why Recycle? E-waste contains several hazardous chemicals and heavy metals significantly affecting human health, among them lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. 133,000 PCs are discarded each day in the US and 130 million cell phones are disposed of yearly. Already consumer electronic products account for more than 40 percent of lead found in landfills.
This is a great opportunity to dispose of home and office e-waste in a responsible manner. Items that will be accepted for a fee to be recycled include: TVs, computers, CPUs, monitors, scanners, ink jet printers, desktop copiers, laser printers, CD & DVD players, fax machines, speakers, answering machines, computer game joysticks and gamepads, computer keyboards and mice, small kitchen & bath appliances, alarm clocks, calculators, smoke detectors, record players, vacuum cleaners. Fees range from $.25 to $50 per item The recycling company can ONLY accept items listed on the e-cycle flyer. They cannot accept items that contain broken glass, i.e., scanner/screen glass, monitor/CRT tubes.
Why do you have to pay to recycle e-waste? Electronics have little value in their current form, and the small amounts of gold, mercury, cadmium, nickel, and other materials are not recovered in amounts to generate significant for the recycler. The fee you pay offsets the cost to the recycler for transportation, storage and extraction material. It is labor intensive and expensive to extract the hazardous substances.
Items that will be accepted for free include: Cell Phones, Cords, Cables, Loose Circuit Boards, Rechargeable Batteries, Household Batteries, Inkjet, Toner Cartridges, Internal Media Drives (CD ROM, Floppy Hard Drives) Car Batteries, PDA's.
The Libby High School Option's class students will once again be helping out with the event.
E-cycle is being sponsored by: Kootenai Disposal, Lincoln County, Valley Recycling, Northwest Montana Economic Development, CDM and Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
