Turkey Vulture
April 20, 2010
Carol Cady sent in this photo of a turkey vulture perched along the old haul road near Libby on Monday, April 19th.
Commonly called a turkey buzzard (or just "buzzard"), it ranges from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America. It has a wing span up to 6 feet long and can live up to 16 years in the wild. It is a scavenger that feeds almost exclusively on dead animals.
In the United States, it is a legally protected bird under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 which prohibits taking or killing it, or possessing any of its body parts including feathers, eggs and nests.
