Libby downtown surveillance camera on indefinite hold

The Libby City Council has tabled indefinitely a motion to hold a meeting with downtown business owners to discuss the implementation of Mayor Doug Roll's Mineral Avenue surveillance camera.

Having found the cost of video surveillance capable of night-vision too expensive, Libby Police Chief Jim Smith presented the council with the alternative of still-frame cameras similar to those used in Darby. The cost was substantially less, nearly a fifth of the video cameras.

Mayor Doug Roll asked the council for permission to take the proposal to a meeting of downtown business owners, which the council soundly rejected.

The bicycle ordinance will prohibit riding bicycles on sidewalks only on Mineral Avenue in the downtown area. As adopted by the City Council, the ordinance does not include California Avenue, nor Highway Two from Mahoney Road to Maple Street as originally proposed by the Mayor.

The Mayor will investigate establishment of a "bike route" from The Rosauers-shopping center parking lot to Idaho Avenue, along 10th Street to Dakota Avenue, and Dakota to Cedar Street, allowing bikers a safer parallel path to bypass Highway Two.
