Road work discussed

The Montana Department of Transportation met with Libby residents to present plans for restriping Highway Two from Larch Street to the foot of Whiskey Hill.
The Department's plan would change the road from its current four lane configuration to a five lane providing a left hand turn lane.
The work will include installing Americans with Disabilities upgrades on the corners and driveway approaches, flattening existing ramps and installing "detectors" in the surface for the visually impaired.
Funding for the project comes from the Department's pavement preservation budget, not American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money, although representatives did not want to comment on the cost of the project which in addition to the striping on Highway 2 will include milling and resurfacing Highway 37/California Avenue through town and over the Kootenai River Bridge.
Another suggestion was to reduce Highway 2/Ninth Street from its current four lane to a two lane plus left turn lane from Mahoney Road to Cedar Street through town.
The sentiment of those attending was strongly "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it", preferring to leave the configuration as it is.
The best solution to traffic management is responsible driving.
The project is scheduled for this summer. _____________________________
