Health Care Reform and Libby Medicare
by Duane Williams, KLCB-KTNY Radio
March 25, 2010

While Republican Senators attempt to stop the health care reform train, amendments to remove portions of the bill are being put forth to force reconsideration in the House.

Among the amendments turned back was a proposal by Senator John McCain , an Arizona Republican, that would remove what he called "sweetheart deals" that helped secure Democratic votes through more Medicaid funding to provide medical care for victims of asbestos exposure in Libby.

Montana Democrat Max Baucus , one of the architects of the health-care bill, called that amendment "a political stunt at the expense of victimized people."

So far, the Libby Medicare provision is secured, but it is a target.

Baucus will be in Libby Wednesday to break-ground on the renovation of the Center for Asbestos Related Disease.
