Harbinger of Spring

One of the earliest signs of spring has already appeared: pussy willow (Salix discolor) blooms, shown here south of Libby on Highway 2. The blooms are actually newly budding male catkins covered in a grayish fuzz, leading to the likeness to cats. Male and female flowers are borne on different plants.
