Libby Plywood Plant

A pawl of dark smoke hangs over the former mill site this morning.
The former J. Neils/St Regis/Champion/Stimson plywood plant lit up the Thursday night sky as it burned. It is too early to know the cause of the blaze, which was fast and hot. It was part of the old mill site that once was Libby's major industry and now the site of the Kootenai Business Park, owned by Lincoln County under the Port Authority. Another piece of Libby's history gone. The sawmill burned years ago gathering huge crowds as did last night's fire. Fire trucks responded to the fire about 9:30pm. Departments from Libby, Troy, Cabinet View, and Fisher River responded.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's office, the building housed several small industrial businesses. Portions of the building were under demolition. The building is a total loss.
Lincoln County Sheriff, Daryl Anderson, said the cause is, of course, under investigation by his office and the Montana State Fire Marshall. _____________________________
