The Libby City Council has heard a proposal for a $160,000 skateboard park.
The park is a replacement for a much smaller park on Utah Avenue which was removed when the Lincoln County Campus of Flathead Community College built two houses at the site as part of a construction trades retraining program.
The original park was in a low-profile residential area, which developers of the new park say, led to loud music, vocal profanity, drugs and other rowdy and unlawful activities. Further complicating the situation was the park being too small and making private property like the Mormon Church, Catholic Church, the Libby Clinic and other locations in Libby still better for skateboarding than the park itself.
Trent Oelberg told the Council the proposed skateboard park will be a World Class Facility in a high-profile location which will limit bad behavior because of high visibility, an arena that challenges and inspires means a greater sense of respect for the property, local skateboarders will have to raise funds which increases sense of ownership, it will attract people of all ages and bring people from all-over the region.
The park is proposed for an area at the City-owned Legion Ball Park between Highway 37 and the outfield fence of the ball park on Second Street.
The initial phase will cost $17,000, phase two $40,000, and the final phase $100,000 for a total of $157,000. ______________________________
