Chili Cook-Off a great success
by Heritage Museum
October 6, 2009

The 4th Annual Chili Cook-Off at the Heritage Museum was a great success. The weather cooperated and we had a cool, but beautiful autumn morning. Emcee Duane WIlliams kept the audience entertained and informed as the four judges, Susan Cox, Lin Patton, Dr. Dan Hall and Jeanie Gentry, tasted their way through the contest entries.

Twelve pots of chili were entered and judged on presentation, aroma, consistency, flavor and aftertaste. When the numbers were tallied, the winners were announced. In the "Meat, No Beans" category, $100 cash for 1st place went to Patty Hardgrove for her "Bean-Free Garden Chili", $50 cash for 2nd place to Tim Harcourt for "Sneaky Pete", and dinner for two at The Venture for 3rd place to Montana Hutton for his "Montana Bliss".

In the "Beans, with or without Meat" category, Helen Tarbert received 1st place ($100) for her "Black Bean Chili", Montana Hutton received 2nd place ($50) for his "Cajun Swamp Chili" and Wilma Noble received 3rd place (dinner for two at The Venture) for her "Never the Same Name Chili".

After the public had a chance to sample and vote for their favorite, the "People's Choice Award" went to Patty Hardgrove. Her prize was a Fiesta Bonita gift certificate and an embroidered apron commemorating the event and her win for the "Best Bowl o' Chili".

The other cooks who competed were Kaya Hardgrove with her "Nana's Northwest Mild & Sweet Chili", Dennis Heckman with his "Chili for the Color Blind and Open Minded", Norma Hanson with her entry simply titled "My Chili", Mitzi Smart with "Mitzi's Experimental Chili", Karen Naulty with "Santa Fe Trail Chili", and the team of Mike Powers, Mitch Powers and Big Dave with their "Naturally Good Heritage Chili."

Get your recipes ready for next year! The 5th Annual Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for the first Saturday in October 2010.
