A two-vehicle collision at the Yaak Hill killed one man and injured two others on Wednesday, September 2.
The accident occurred near the 6.9 mile marker of U.S. 2 west of Troy. A passenger car driven by Timothy A. Fury, age 50, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho attempted to cross the lane of travel apparently in an effort to turn off the highway at a public access to Yaak River. A pickup owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe, driven by Roger Strandley, swerved and braked in an evasive action to avoid or minimize the collision. The two vehicles collided on the North, paved portion of the shoulder. The front of the BNSF pickup collided with the passenger side of the car. After the severe collision, both vehicles ended up upside down in the North side ditch with the BNSF truck partially on the roadway.
Timothy Fury of Bonners Ferry received fatal injuries from the collision and died in his car. BNSF driver, Roger Strandley of Bonners Ferry, ID., received apparent injuries from the collision and was released from St. John's Hospital the evening of the collision. The passenger in the BNSF pickup, Jon Kerby of Bonners Ferry, received injuries from the collision, and was treated and released from St. John's Hospital Wednesday evening.
Timothy Fury was not wearing a seatbelt. The two occupants of the BNSF truck, Strandley, 34, and Kerby, 49, were wearing seatbelts. While alcohol involvement by the deceased driver is being investigated, it is not considered a contributing factor at this time, according to the Montana Highway Patrol. This crash is still under investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol.
The accident closed Highway 2 for hours. The highway was not fully reopened until 8:15 pm. ____________________________________ Story by Duane Williams, KLCB 1230 AM Libby News Radio, www.todaysbestcountryonline.com.
