EPA Director for the State of Montana, John Wardell, was found dead about 2:30 Friday afternoon as a result of a 200 to 300 foot fall in the Leigh Lake area, according to Robbie Bowe of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
The accident was reported about 7pm Thursday evening. David Thompson Search and Rescue responded initiating a search.
Alert and Forest Service contract choppers flew the area until dark, at which time a Malmstrom Air Force Base chopper flying with night vision searched the area from 11 until 1am, when the early morning storm forced them to abandon efforts.
Friday a second Malmstrom chopper was able to lower personnel into the steep, rocky area where Wardell's body was found and recovered.
Wardell, 64, was from Helena. He was familiar to many Libby residents due to his involvement with the EPA asbestos cleanup activities in Libby. ______________________________
