Eileen Carney received the Libby Rotary Club's "2009 Rotarian of the Year" award for her quiet and tireless leadership and volunteer support to several community organizations in Libby and Lincoln County.
"Eileen truly lives the Rotary motto of 'Service Above Self,'" said Paul Lammers, immediate past Libby Rotary Club President.
Carney wrote and secured a Rotary grant for the Libby tennis courts and helped organize volunteer work crews for the project. She was instrumental in arranging for a Lincoln County student to travel to France and participate in the Rotary student foreign exchange program.
Eileen organizes and runs fund-raising rummage sales on behalf of several local non-profit organizations including Kootenai Valley Pets for Life. She supports the Rotary Club sponsored Shakespeare in the Park program and serves on the Boards of several community organizations.
Carney lived four years in Guatemala and knew people there who George Gerard contacted about the Libby Rotary Club Guatemala water project, translating documents, and making other contacts in Guatemala.
Originally from Billings, Carney graduated from Carroll College in Helena and holds a Masters from the University of Montana in Spanish. Carney moved to Libby in 1975 to work at Libby High School. __________________________________
