Libby Mayor Doug Roll is facing a challenge from Councilwoman Peggy Williams while six candidates have filed for three open four-year terms on the council to be filled in November’s election.
Filing for municipal candidates closed last Thursday. Roll, who was appointed to fill out the remainder of Tony Berget’s term as mayor after Berget was elected county commissioner last fall, filed for as a candidate for a full four-year term. Williams, who was elected to a four-year council term in 2007, also filed as a candidate for mayor.
Three current council members’ seats are up for grabs this year – Lee Bothman, Ron Carter and Wally McElmurry. All three filed as candidates for a full term, as did Vicky Lawrence, Robin Benson and Barbara Desch.
Councilman D.C. Orr, who was appointed to the council last December, filed as a candidate for the two years remaining on his term. Also filing for the two-year vacancy is Charlie Berget, the son of Tony Berget and a 2009 graduate of Libby High School.
In Troy, none of the three incumbents whose terms expire this year filed for re-election. Mayor Jim Hammons and council members Laura Schrader and Larry Baker will all be leaving the council at the end of the year.
Councilman Don Banning and Ed Hanson, a former member of the Troy School Board, have filed for mayor. Filing for the two open council seats are Phillip Fisher and Frances McCully.
Both Libby and Troy will conduct their municipal elections by mail ballot this year. According to Lincoln County Clerk and Recorder Tammy Lauer, the move will save money and promote greater voter turnout. ______________________________________
