The Libby City Council has given the Fire Department the go ahead to apply for federal grant money, through the so-called stimulus package, for a new fire hall.
The current plan would be to demolish the existing facility downtown and replace it with a new structure similar in design to the Libby Volunteer Ambulance building.
There actually in not much money available for fire halls in the Obama handout, but according to Fire Chief Tom Wood, Libby can meet the top three criteria for the money. High unemployment and contaminated facilities are two of the top criteria.
The 1964 fire hall addition to the old city hall is concrete block with vermiculite fill. The 1980 fire hall is block with styrofoam pellets in the walls.
The council was adamant that the 1930s vintage old city hall be retained in any plan to remove and replace the other two structures.
In other Council decisions, the Libby City council has decided to move to mail-in ballots passing Resolution 1730 to approve mail ballots for Municipal Elections. ______________________________
