by Kootenai Valley Record
December 11, 2008
Libby High School athletes, including the 2008 Montana Class A state champion boys’ soccer team, were honored during the school’s fall activities awards ceremony last week at Ralph Tate Gymnasium.
The state champion Loggers put four players – Kyle Berke, Lewis Brossman, Dustin Morningstar and Evan May – on the all-conference team, and two of those – Morningstar and May – received all-state recognition. Berke was named most valuable offensive player while Morningstar and Brossman shared defensive honors. May was named most valuable midfielder. Brandon Pagacz was named most improved, and Brossman and James Shnackenberg were picked as most inspirational.
The Libby girls’ soccer team won the divisional title this year and advanced to the state semi-finals, ending the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Billings Central. Five members of the team – Kaila Forster, Jaime Gilden, Lindsey Kehn, Brittany Martin and Anna Valentine – received all-conference honors, with Gilden and Valentine also being named all-state. The team’s top scorer with 23 goals over the course of the season, Valentine was named most valuable offensive player. Forster was named most valuable defensive player, and Gilden was named most valuable midfielder. Kehn was honored as most inspirational, and LaRona Luscher was selected as most improved.
After losing their first conference game to Bigfork, the Lady Logger volleyball team went on to finish with a 14-3 record against Class A teams, losing only to two-time Montana champion Lewistown and 2008 state runner-up Miles City in the state tournament. The divisional champion Libby team finished the state tournament in third place.
All-conference honors went to Jackie Mee, Devon Hoyer, Nichole Newman and Jordan Refsland. Mee was also named all-state. Mee was picked as the team’s most valuable player, Refsland was named most inspirational, and Alex Kulbeck was named most improved.
Kulbeck was also selected as most valuable player for the 15-3 junior varsity volleyball team. Ashley Cislo was named most improved, and Katie Emery was most inspirational.
Both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams finished fourth at the divisional tournament. Zach Watson and Jackie Mee placed in the top 10 at divisionals and received all-conference honors, and Mee received all-state recognition as well. Watson was named most valuable boy, and Mee was most valuable girl. Most improved honors went to Brock Boulware and Chelsey Oedewaldt, and Royce Hendrickson and Jona Peltier were named most inspirational.
For the Logger cross-country teams, William Lott and Nicole Rios were named most valuable runners. Jacob Thomas was named most improved boy, and Cassi Moog and Brandi Mirador shared that honor for the girls’ team. Ben Elliott and Elizabeth Rogers were named most inspirational. Corey Willis was named most valuable member of the Logger cheerleading squad. Rachel Cernick was named most inspirational, and Cierra Stehlik was picked as most spirited.
While the Logger football team ended the season with only 4-5 record, head coach Neil Fuller praised his players for their strong team play and refusal to give up. When the Loggers fell behind 35-0 in the first half against Polson, "I was looking for a way out of the stadium," Fuller said, but the team fought back and ended only one touchdown behind at 48-41.
Quarterback Joel Fuller was named all-conference, conference offensive player of the year and all-state, as well as his team’s dedication award. At last week’s awards ceremony, Fuller was also presented with a special football commemorating his cumulative achievements in his career as a Logger. Fuller is in the top five high school quarterbacks in Montana state history for both total yards thrown and touchdowns thrown, noted coach Jim May.
Other Logger football players receiving all-conference recognition were T.J. Benson, Conner Benson and Justin Graham. T.J. Benson was named most inspirational player, and Cole Lauer was named most improved. Special coaches’ awards, representing things like effort, team play and attitude, went to Justin Graham, Cody Ercanbrack and Skylar Johnsen. _______________________________________
