Commissioner Rita Windom, who had planned to resign September 30th, has withdrawn her planned resignation.
The Republican Central Committee, represented by President Alvin Benitz, submitted three names to the Commissioners to fill Windom's seat, Tony Berget, Jerry Okonski and Benitz himself. But Benitz told the Commissioners the Republican Central Committee was recommending Berget, the top vote getter in the Primary.
Commissioner Marianne Roose felt that the voters had spoken in the June Primary in choosing Libby Mayor Tony Berget, and thus Roose nominated Tony Berget to fill the seat to be vacated by Windom.
Tony was the choice and should be appointed, said Commissioner Marianne Roose.
Commissioner John Konzen refused to second the nomination.
Windom then withdrew her resignation until November 15th, by which time the election will be held and certified, and the decision made by the voters.
That does not mean that Berget, chosen by the voters in the June Republican Primary, will retain the seat. Second-place finisher Jerry Okonski has filed as a write-in candidate on the November General Election ballot. Both Berget and Okonski ran on the Republican slate in June. No Democrats entered the Commissioner race. Since Berget is the Republican candidate, and Okonski, by law cannot run as a Democrat, he must run as a write-in. _________________________________________
