USDA Wildlife Services Specialists killed two wolves today (Thursday, September 4, 2008) that were chasing cattle near Fortine. The 90-pound male and 70-pound female wolves were part of the Murphy Lake Pack that killed several cattle a few weeks ago. When officers located the wolves near Fortine today, the wolves were actively chasing cattle on private land. Wildlife Services specialists shot and killed the wolves from a helicopter. The wolf pack had been ranging around the Trego and Stryker areas for the past few weeks. Wolves in the pack had killed three calves and one adult cow on public lands near Stryker about three weeks ago. FWP and Wildlife Services communicated closely on the pack’s activities. According to FWP Wildlife Biologist Tim Thier, the Murphy Lake Pack is one of the oldest packs in northwest Montana. They were first documented in 1989. The pack was involved in killing sheep in 1997, but otherwise few reports of depredations have been attributed to the pack. Thier adds that if landowners suspect depredations from wolves or other predators, they should protect the livestock carcass with a tarp so investigators can verify the cause of death. Landowners should report all suspected depredations immediately. To learn more about Montana’s recovered wolf population, visit FWP online at fwp.mt.gov/wildthings/wolf, where visitors can also tell FWP when they see wolves or wolf sign. The information helps to verify the activity, distribution, and pack size of Montana’s wolf population.
