Heritage Museum Chili Cook-Off
by Maggie Craig
September 21, 2008
The Heritage Museum held its 3rd annual chili cook-off Saturday under sunshine and a blue sky. Seven contestants made their specialties for the judges and public to sample and savor. The event was well-attended, as people poured onto the museum grounds to make the rounds of chili sampling. Proceeds from the event go toward operating expenses for the museum.
Chili Mistress was Susan Castaneda. Judging were Danny Lewis, Larry Hebenstreit, Duane Williams and Linda Gerard, using a point system for such things as presentation, aroma, flavor and consistency. Emcee was Debi Davidson, appropriately attired in her "Hot Stuff" (chili pepper) outfit. Entertainment was provided by Lee Tonner and Ann Mason.
Contestants included Karen Naulty with her "Mesquite Roasted Chili," Jay and Becky Goley with their "Cincinnati-Style Chili," Angelina Hansford with "Hearty Italian Chili," Bob Castaneda with his "Cabinet Mountain Chili," Jim Mari with "Blackie's Cowboy Chili," and Cathy and Dan Campos and Wanda and Chuck Breeding with their "Grande Chili Rhapsody" and "Here's Tootin'" chilis. Categories included Meat, No Beans; Beans, With or Without Meat; and a People's Choice award.
Winners for the day were:
Meat, No Beans: 1st - Bob Castaneda 2nd - Karen Naulty 3rd - Jay and Becky Goley
Beans, With or Without Meat: 1st - Team Texas Toast: Cathy Campos and Wanda Breeding for their "Grande Chili Rhapsody" 2nd - Jim Mari 3rd - Angelina Hansford
People's Choice: Karen Naulty
The two judged categories included cash prizes of $100/1st place, $50/2nd place and $25/3rd place, donated by First National Bank, Loveless Realty and Montana Country Real Estate. Many contestants donated their prize winnings back to the Heritage Museum.
In conjunction with the cook-off, the museum was open for the day but is now closed for the season. The museum will open again in the spring; watch for its grand opening!
