Granite Creek Cleanup Begins
September 4, 2008
Crews contracted by the EPA have begun working in Granite Creek in an effort to protect public health from Libby Amphibole asbestos found in the stream. The project first involves adding riprap to the banks (pictured here on Wednesday), which was lost during the flooding in 1997; a project the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has long wanted to initiate and subsequently coordinated with the EPA when asbestos contamination was found. Next, a cement slurry will be sprayed on the remaining asbestos-contaminated riprap to trap the asbestos fibers, preventing the fibers from becoming airborne. Then another layer of riprap will be placed on the banks to provide additional protection from the asbestos fibers. About 1/4 mile of Granite Creek will be treated in this manner, and similar work on Flower Creek and Callahan Creek is also scheduled for this month.
