Three local girls are in the running for the title of Rodeo Queen for the PRCA Kootenai River Rodeo July 25-26 at J. Neils Memorial County Park.

Cassidy Hand, 15, will be a sophomore this fall at Troy High School. She is the daughter of Connie and Darrell Hand.

Cassidy plays basketball, volleyball and softball and enjoys fly fishing, hunting and hiking in her spare time. She will be riding her horse Cody for the rodeo.

Sari McCollum, 16, is the daughter of Brent and Audray McCollum of Libby. She will be a junior this fall at Libby High School.

Sari plays volleyball and softball and enjoys fishing, hunting and camping. She has three horses and will be riding Lacey Jane for the rodeo.

Tessa Spencer, 17, will be a senior this fall at Libby High School. She is the daughter of Shelly Dever and Rick Spencer.

Tessa works as a secretary at Columbia Mountain Mechanical. She plays basketball and enjoys horses, spending time with friends and watching movies. She’ll be riding her horse Kyanne for the rodeo.

The three girls have been getting lessons in horsemanship, poise and behavior. They will be judged on a variety of criteria including their riding skills, the "queen wave" and flag carry, photos and an interview. The winner will be announced on the first night of the rodeo.

The rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Events will include steer wrestling, team and tie-down roping, barrel racing, saddle broncs, bull riding and bareback riding. There will be world champion bull fighters, a mechanical bull, a PRCA specialty act, and live music each night after the rodeo.

Pre-rodeo events on Saturday will include an autograph session with rodeo personnel and rodeo activities for kids.

Montanore Minerals, which has been a sponsor of the event in the past, has increased its support and is serving as co-host of the rodeo with the Libby Area Chamber of Commerce. Montanore’s support will be used for additional prize money for rodeo events, stock contractor fees, rodeo personnel, security and advertising.

Timberline Auto Center is supporting the rodeo as automotive sponsor.

Tickets are available in Libby at the Chamber of Commerce and Timberline Auto, and in Troy at Trojan Lanes. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the gate, with children 6 and under free.
