St. John’s Cardiac Rehab receives Patient Satisfaction Award
by St. John’s Lutheran Hospital
July 29, 2008
St. John’s Lutheran Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Department in Libby, Montana, has won the SJLH Quarterly Patient Satisfaction Award (QPSA), taking the award away from two-time QPSA winners, SJLH Rehabilitative Services. The award is based on surveys that are completed by patients who have utilized services at St. John’s Hospital over the past quarter.
Scoring a 99% on patient satisfaction for the months of March, April, and May of 2008, St. John’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Department was awarded the traveling patient satisfaction trophy, a $100 team award, and individual employee certificates of appreciation for their hard work and dedication to their patients and their profession.
Currently, the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital has 12 participants, and is led by Registered Nurse and Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator, Ruth Fenn. "It’s a proven fact that people with heart disease who go through Cardiac Rehab live longer and healthier lives than those who don’t enter into the program. My group usually consists of people who have had heart attacks, by-pass surgery, stint surgeries, valve replacement, and angina (chest pains) all of who must be referred by their doctor."
"Winning this award is an honor," added Fenn. "Quality care means that our patients are happy and getting out of the program the proper education and knowledge of their disease. It means we are successfully fulfilling our mission to provide the best quality care possible. This program is all about our patients. We treat them like we would want our family members to be treated."
Fenn also mentioned that the department is planning to use the money from this award to have a potluck for their patients later in the summer. "They are the ones who deserve the award. I just take them by the hand, and tell them that they get out of the program what they put into it. We gently encourage them to better themselves through knowledge and exercise."
Robert O’Rourke, Respiratory Therapy and Cardiac Rehabilitation Manager stated "I’m proud of the award because we strive everyday to make every person that’s enrolled in Ruth’s program know that we will do everything in our power to get their lives back on track after such a significant setback. Ruth and her group put a lot of time into educating people, not only about their disease, but also about lifestyle modifications that will lead to healthier, happier, more productive lives. The way we do this is by explaining the disease process, progression, risk factors, and prevention, all while acting as a liaison between the primary care providers, patients, and families. The ultimate goal is to get the patient to once again feel in control of his or her own life."
Barb Dumont, RN, Vice President of Community Services, Quality Risk Manager at St. John’s stated, "The Quarterly Patient Satisfaction Award was developed to reward and recognize a department that achieved the highest patient satisfaction scores for the quarter. The staff of the winning department demonstrates our hospital’s values, especially ‘We provide compassionate, patient-centered care’."
