Kootenai NF proposes changes to Campground and Cabin rental fees
by Kootenai National Forest
July 8, 2008
The Kootenai National Forest is planning to increase fees at some developed recreation sites for the 2008 season. Through the Recreation Facility Analysis process completed in July 2007, it was determined that additional revenue was necessary to be able to continue to operate and maintain the developed sites. The additional revenue came from increase fees at some sites and establishment of new fees at sites that are currently available to the public at no charge.
Sites selected for fee increase in 2008 were entered in a fee pricing tool that compared the amenities at the recreation site with those in sites operated by other federal, state, and local agencies and by private individuals or companies. The pricing tool provided a fair market value range based on fees charged at the other sites. The Kootenai purposefully kept the use fees below the fair market value for most sites in response to the local economy and the desire to phase in the increase to reduce impacts to the local users.
The proposed 2008 fees have been reviewed by the Forest Service Regional Fee Board. Proposed fees will also be reviewed by a Recreational Resource Advisory Committee (RRAC.) This committee is comprised of several business and private citizens to provide additional public evaluation. The Regional Forester will approve or disapprove the proposed fees based on the recommendation of the RRAC.
