Vince Huntsberger completes medical school

Former Libby Logger and University of Montana Grizzly football standout Vince Huntsberger has finished medical school in Washington and is headed to Michigan to train as an emergency room physician.
Huntsberger received his medical degree from the University of Washington this spring. After completing a four-year residency program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he hopes to return to the Northwest to practice in a smaller community.
The son of Gary and Kate Huntsberger of Libby, Vince attended UM on a full football scholarship. He was a starting safety for the Grizzlies all four years and received both athletic and academic All-American honors his sophomore, junior and senior years. In his senior year, he was a member of the 2001 team that beat Furman for the national championship and was inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame as a scholar-athlete.
While Huntsberger grew up enjoying sports and excelled athletically, he says academics always came first.
“It’s kind of the motto I took, and the motto I was instilled with by my parents,” he said.
After graduating from UM with a degree in biology, Huntsberger played arena football for a year in Billings, then started medical school in 2003. He was considering studying to be an orthopedic surgeon, but decided on emergency medicine based on positive experiences during an ER rotation.
For Huntsberger, football provided the opportunity to pursue his education and prepare for a career after sports.
“I think one in one million make the NFL,” he said. “The chances are tough. I saw the writing on the wall.”
