U Serve Libby comments on tennis court tree cutting

Editor’s Note: We received a letter from Laurie Mari, Treasurer of U Serve Libby, Inc., with comments on what they felt was misinformation in an article we posted by Duane Williams of KLCB Radio regarding the new tennis courts in Libby. “Whether one agrees or disagrees with a project should not determine how the news is presented to the public. We accept that some people cannot see the value that these tennis courts will bring to the community, but we believe this project is worthwhile and will be an asset to Libby,” Ms. Mari wrote. Below is a copy of the letter U Serve wrote to Mr. Williams on April 16, 2008: ______________________________________
April 16, 2008 Dear Mr. Williams, It was very disheartening to read your article on the LibbyMT.com website Sunday night. I believe it contains some misinformation. First, it’s misleading to refer to the trees that were removed as “legacy trees” because people will most likely think you are referring to the series of trees planted and marked as the “One Millionth Tree” and so on. I’m sure you are aware that those trees are intact and were never in danger of being removed for these tennis courts.
Secondly, I don’t recall ever stating that “no tree damage would result” in locating the courts at that site, and no one I’ve spoken with remembers stating that either.
Lastly, you wrote that the “trees were cut to allow the tennis courts to be located closer [to] the privately owned Montana Athletic Club…” In fact, U Serve didn’t choose the site. That is the site that was offered by the city, and we were pleased with the location. It was a wonderful coincidence that the Montana Athletic Club happened to be close by.
The volunteers of U Serve Libby, Inc. have worked for seven years toward construction of the Libby Community Tennis Courts. It is extremely exciting for us and the many supporters of the project to see progress. We understand that not everyone can see that these courts will be an asset to the community. Some things have to be proven. We intend to do that.
Sincerely, Laurie Mari Treasurer ______________________________________ For more information about the new tennis court project, contact Sandy Hauck or Laurie Mari with U Serve Libby, Inc., phone: 406-293-8260, or by e-mail: uservelibby@frontiernet.net.
