STOKR Sunday ride open to locals
Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River bike ride
April 5, 2008
STOKR organizers changed the way of filling the open slots for the annual May ride by switching over to a lottery system. Each year, STOKR (Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River) quickly fills up the allotted slots for the two-day ride that benefits the Kootenai Valley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In 2007 organizers upped the number of riders to 450, but they still had to turn some people away who wanted to participate.
According to STOKR organizer Susie Rice, this year’s lottery system seems to have discouraged local riders from registering. Organizers have opened up the Sunday ride on May 11 so that locals can participate. This is a 38-mile ride from the Chamber of Commerce on US Hwy 2 in Libby, out the Haul Road east of town, up to the Libby dam and to the dam visitor's center (for incredible cinnamon rolls) and back to Libby on Hwy 37.
STOKR takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 10 & 11, 2008. The Sunday ride starts at 9:00 AM. Cost is $20. Entry forms are available at the Western News, Kootenai Valley Record, the MAC and the Chamber. Deadline for registering is April 15.
